How can medical practices that exchange data be connected to the telematics infrastructure securely and in compliance with the law? This case study demonstrates how standardised firewall technology and automated rollouts enable the efficient expansion of the telematics infrastructure on a large scale.
IT service providers and system integrators in the healthcare sector face a particular challenge: they must protect highly sensitive data and comply with complex regulatory requirements, whilst at the same time delivering solutions that can be operated and scaled efficiently. In particular, integration with the telematics infrastructure (TI) places high demands on network security, stability and interoperability.
Scalable solution
Psyprax GmbH, a leading provider of practice management software and cybersecurity solutions for psychotherapy practices in Germany, serves several thousand practices and supports them in the secure and compliant digitalisation of their practice processes.
As part of the transition to modern TI gateway concepts, there was a need for a standardised security solution that both meets TI requirements and is easy for IT service providers to deploy and operate.
In collaboration with Securepoint, a scalable solution was implemented for this purpose. Last year, a total of 2,500 Securepoint firewalls were installed in psychotherapy practices as part of an initial roll-out – with a further 2,500 to follow in 2026. The firewalls form the central security component of the practice network and provide the foundation for stable and compliant operation of the IT connection.
TI-Proxy – full connectivity without connectors
A key component of the project was the close technical collaboration between Securepoint and psyprax. To enable reliable communication between the psyprax practice software and the telematics infrastructure gateway via the firewall, Securepoint developed the TI-Proxy in collaboration with RISE (Research Industrial Systems Engineering Deutschland).
This component, specifically tailored to TI data traffic, ensures that traffic from the card terminals is routed cleanly and in a controlled manner via the TI gateway, without introducing additional complexity into the practice network.
This creates significant added value for IT service providers and system integrators: The combination of the Securepoint firewall and the TI-Proxy forms a central building block for a standardised, repeatable implementation that can be efficiently rolled out to many practices.
At the same time, the administrative burden during ongoing operations is reduced because security functions, network control and the TI connection – including communication between card terminals and the TI gateway – are consolidated within a consistent architecture.
Efficient and automated – zero-touch enrolment
A key technical component of the project was Securepoint Zero-Touch Enrolment, which enabled a highly automated rollout of the firewalls. The devices were registered in the Securepoint Management System and linked to the designated configuration profiles even before delivery. Once installed on-site, simply connecting them to the network was sufficient for the firewall to authenticate itself, retrieve the assigned configuration and commence operation.
There was no need whatsoever for manual on-site intervention or complex initial configurations. For IT service providers, this results in a consistent, reproducible implementation with clearly defined standards, reduced susceptibility to errors and a significant reduction in workload during rollout and commissioning – particularly for large-scale installations such as the psyprax project.
A partnership based on mutual respect
Another key factor in the collaboration was the close, direct communication with Securepoint. For psyprax project manager Erik Schmidt, this is a crucial aspect of the partnership: “Securepoint impressed us with their support team, who were always available and highly competent, and with the clear lines of responsibility provided by a dedicated project coordinator.”
Short lines of communication, rapid feedback and solution-oriented coordination made it possible to implement technical requirements efficiently and drive the project forward swiftly.
Solution-focused and tailor-made
This project serves as a prime example of how Securepoint solutions can be successfully scaled within the healthcare market. Thanks to the close integration of firewall technology and sector-specific IT integration, IT service providers are given a reliable foundation for supporting healthcare clients in a secure, compliant and future-proof manner.
