The Verein zur Förderung der Berufsbildung e. V. (Association for the Promotion of Vocational Training), or VFB for short, is an educational institution for vocational training and further education in the Stuttgart region and neighbouring districts, supported by its member companies. For 40 years, the VFB has seen itself as a service provider for companies and their employees in this catchment area. The VFB employs 28 people at several locations.
Dissatisfaction with IT was the impetus
At the beginning of 2014, the VFB was dissatisfied with its IT environment. The reason for this was a former IT administrator who did not always manage the educational institution's firewalls reliably and only implemented desired functions after delays. This meant that it was not possible to establish a permanent, effective connection between the three VFB locations, including all services.
A new service provider was found in spring 2014 in the form of Logotec Computertechnologie GmbH from Renchen. As part of the collaboration, a new IT security solution was to be set up. During the planning phase, it was essential to take into account the individual requirements of the VFB: the reliable functioning of telephony to external locations via a VPN tunnel and the connection of the entire location locking systems in cooperation with ISGUS GmbH (German manufacturer of system solutions for time recording, access control, etc.) had to be guaranteed.

Reliable firewall solution with Securepoint
To find a solution, Logotec went in search of virtual firewalls or appliances that would fulfil today's security standards and also meet future requirements. The main focus was on simple administration and high reliability of the firewall solution for the end customer.
The decision was ultimately made in favour of the German manufacturer Securepoint. The new solution was implemented between May and August 2019.
Scalable firewall hardware for site connection
An RC400 at the VFB headquarters in Ludwigsburg, an RC300 in Böblingen as well as an RC100 and a Black Dwarf in Ludwigsburg are used as NextGen UTM firewalls for the site connection. VFB has a total of 150 user licences.
The Securepoint NextGen UTM firewalls offer IT system houses a standardised interface for device administration and management. The Securepoint solution also impresses with scalable, retrofittable hardware and reliable interfaces for the main sites. The big plus for the manufacturer's partners is the free support.
